I was born in Houston and raised in San Antonio. I received my BA degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a MA from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.
In 1974 I joined Sherwood Olds and Associates a five man brokerage firm in Houston, Texas. Sherwood was the Head Landman at Standard of Texas, now Chevron, before he started this firm. My training in land practices was personally supervised by Mr. Olds. Clients included Michael T. Halbouty, Tamarack Oil & Gas Company, Texas Gas Exploration Company and Dow Chemical Company. Work was generally in East Texas.
In 1976 I joined Jay H. Smith & Associates, another small brokerage firm in Houston. Jay had been a Mobil Landman while in Corpus Christi and he along with his wife Jane, provided closely supervised training. Clients included Conoco Oil Company, now ConocoPhillips and various independent exploration firms. Work ranged from East Texas to South Texas.
In 1977 I became Land Manager at Bayside Petroleum Corporation in San Antonio. At Bayside all phases of the exploration business was experienced from supervising brokers to investor relations. The company developed prospects, raised money, drilled wells and conducted operations.
In 1980 I started my own lease acquisition firm, working primarily with W. F. Calohan, Ltd. in the Bryan Woodbine Field play. In 1985 I drilled one 3,500’ well completed as stripper Navarro well. I also sold shallow drilling prospects in and around the San Antonio area.
From 1986 to 1989 I sold deals in a very challenging environment. In 1990 to 1992 I put together lease packages in the Frio County Austin Chalk horizontal drilling play.
Since 1993 I have worked for various Lease Brokers, primarily in Live Oak and Duval Counties of South Texas.
